Golden Apple is the Fleet Feet Sports – Chicago Charity of the Month for February.
Golden Apple is a non-profit organization that inspires, develops and supports teaching excellence in Illinois schools-of-need - where great teachers are needed the most. Golden Apple believes, and research supports, that the most critical contributor to student achievement is the quality of the teacher in a classroom. Golden Apple is dedicated to providing exceptional preparation for teachers and school leaders at all stages of their careers.
The Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois is the largest program of Golden Apple. The program starts by recruiting motivated future educators from diverse backgrounds who have a desire to teach in Illinois schools-of-need. During their college and first years of teaching, Golden Apple provides advanced teacher preparation and mentoring to ensure their lasting success in challenging teaching environments. In return for tuition support and years of mentoring from our master teachers, Golden Apple Scholars commit to teaching in an Illinois school-of-need for five years, and most stay longer.
Why Golden Apple’s Work is Critical: the Demand is Great
Shortages of diverse, high-quality teachers are expected to reach the hundreds of thousands nationally by 2020. In Illinois, the crisis is especially acute -- there are more than 3,400 schools-of-need. To meet this need, Golden Apple is aiming to grow our Scholar cohorts significantly.
Other Golden Apple programs include the Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching & Leadership: Our annually bestowed Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching & Leadership celebrate outstanding teachers and school leaders and invite those awarded the platform to further our mission. This year, Golden Apple will honor 10 4th-8th grade teachers and one K-12 school leader on May 20, 2017 at WTTW Studios in Chicago.
Golden Apple STEM Institute: The Golden Apple STEM Institute introduces elementary school teachers to an inquiry-based instructional approach through unique hands-on, fun-filled and engaging intensive summer courses, followed by in-school coaching throughout the academic year and a three-part series of follow-up sessions designed to build on what is learned during the summer program.
