What to Wear: Fall Marathon

The fall season welcomes a change of weather and updating the wardrobe with layers. In addition to that, race day nears for those who have been training all summer long for their fall goal race.

This week, we are profiling Joanna, from our Fleet Feet Sports – Cheer Team, who will be running her first marathon next month. She’s looking forward to this new challenge especially after completing the Chicago Half Marathon this past weekend and setting a personal record on the course! As the race approaches, Joanna is setting her game plan for the marathon.

Joanna’s Chicago Marathon race goal:

  • Short-term goal – Complete my first marathon.
  • Long-term goal – Stay healthy, so I’ll eventually be able to run Boston (likely at age 60).

This Weekend’s Training Run: Running my last 20 miler (of three total).

Joanna’s Go – To  Gear:

TOP: CHICAGO ENDURANCE SPORTS NIKE SINGLET

Joanna has been pacing the Chicago Endurance Sports training groups this summer and will be sporting her CES Nike Singlet on race day! This singlet is light, breathable… perfect for a fall marathon race.

SPORTS BRA: NIKE SHAPE

The Nike Victory Shape Bra features a compression fit and molded cups for support and natural shaping. The streamlined design helps keep you comfortable during the most rigorous workouts.

BOTTOM: SUGOI RSR SPLIT SHORT

This semi-fitted RSR Split Short is light and fast – everything Joanna will need for race day.

SOCKS: ICEBREAKER LITE MICRO ANKLE SOCKS

Features specially designed for running, including strategically placed cushioning at high-impact areas. The best part of Icebreaker is that the fibers are anti – microbial (no stink!) and are best at absorbing moisture to keep your feet comfortable and dry especially during a long run.

FOOTWEAR: NEWTON DISTANCE

Joanna is currently training in Newton running shoes. Try Newton running shoes out for yourself at either Fleet Feet Sports – Chicago locations. We are currently stocking the Gravity and Distance (featured above – women’s color) models.

Don’t forget that Newton is a proud sponsor of the Newton Ready to Run 20 Miler presented by CARA – Chicago Area Runners Association scheduled for this weekend with packet pickup times at our Lincoln Square location Thursday and Old Town on Friday!

COMPRESSION: CEP CALF SLEEVES

CEP offers functional sport socks and calf sleeves with a patented pressure flow design that is scientifically proven to increase in blood circulation and provide a consequent increase in performance. Compression Calf Sleeves are best used in an active state.

WATCH: GARMIN FORERUNNER

Joanna logs her miles and keeps track of speed and distance with her Garmin watch.

NUTRITION: CLIF SHOT BLOKS, HAMMER GEL & CLIF BAR

Joanna mixes up her nutrition to make sure she’s not running out a fuel during a run. Joanna relies on Clif shot blocks prior to running, Hammer Gel for every 45-60 minutes during the run, and she always carries a Clif bar for when she starts to get a little hungry around mile 15.

HYDRATION: CAMELBAK & FUEL BELT REVENGE 4

Joanna’s always used a handle-held hydration system like the Camelbak Podium Chill Bottle, but is currently looking into using a belt. She recently purchased a FuelBelt Revenge 4 hydration belt from Fleet Feet Sports – Chicago. The belt will enable her to carry more nutrition and has a nice storage pocket for nutrition, phone, ID, etc.

RECOVERY & PREVENTION: TRIGGER POINT GRID ROLLER

Joanna heads straight for her Trigger Point Grid Roller after a run to roll out her legs. The Trigger Point Grid Roller is a great tool to keep your body healthy especially during marathon training. Don’t wait until you feel pain to pick up recovery/prevention tools – start using it now to feel your best.
